A Novel Two-axis Lorentz Actuator: Parametric Design and Analysis

Lorentz actuators are widely used in active vibration isolation systems (AVISs) to create an ultra-quiet environment for sensitive payloads. However, traditional Lorentz actuators are single degree-of-freedom (DOF), and they also have limitations in terms of thrust and lightweight design. Typically, for a 6-DOF AVIS, at least 6 single-axis Lorentz actuators (SALAs) are required. When multiple SALAs are used simultaneously, the cumulative response time and position error cannot be ignored. To address this issue, a novel two-axis Lorentz actuator (TALA) was developed. The interaction effects between the two coils and the parametric effects of the proposed TALA were analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). To verify this, thrust and consistency experiments were conducted on multiple manufactured TALAs. The experimental results showed good linearity and matched well with the FEM values, validating the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.
