Research on grinding parameters for machining spiral grooves on solid carbide end mills using an arc-shaped edge of the grinding wheel

The spiral groove of the overall cemented carbide end mill is an important structural feature that significantly affects its performance. The main metrics for the spiral groove are the core thickness radius and the rake angle. In this paper, we propose the use of grinding with a wheel with a circular arc-shaped edge to create the grooves, based on the enveloping principle. We establish a mathematical model for grinding with a wheel with a circular arc-shaped edge using an analytical approach, and employ a two-step binary search method to determine the wheel posture parameters for different core thicknesses and rake angles. By combining the posture parameters with the machine tool KTooLG3515's structure, we generate G-code and conduct simulation machining in Vericut. We compare and analyze the accuracy of groove formation between circular arc edges and straight edges of the grinding wheel, thus verifying the accuracy of the algorithm and the mathematical model.
