The State of Container Checkpointing with CRIU: A Multi-Case Experience Report

The advent of containerization and orchestration has modernized the way applications are deployed and controlled, yet effectively managing the state of stateful containerized Applications remains an ongoing challenge. Checkpoint and restore approaches, exemplified by tools like CRIU, offer solutions by capturing and restoring container states, enabling migration and recovery with minimal downtime. In this paper, we explore the practical applications of CRIU, including live migration and rapid initialization, and discuss its integration into Kubernetes. Our findings highlight CRIU's potential for industrial use but also highlight the need for ongoing performance improvements and deeper Kubernetes intearation.
