Design and Implementation of GaN-Based DC-DC Converter for Solar Application in a DC Microgrid

This paper presents the design and implementation of a Gallium Nitride (GaN) based DC-DC converter for solar application in a DC microgrid environment. The superior characteristics of GaN devices, such as high switching speed and power density, the developed converter aims to enhance the overall performance and efficiency of the microgrid system with solar PVs. In this paper, the comprehensive simulation studies are followed by hardware prototyping and experimental validation. Key design considerations encompass GaN device selection, converter topology, and control strategy. Performance evaluations include transient response characterization under varying operating conditions. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed GaN-based converter in facilitating power conversion within solar-based DC microgrids, thereby contributing to the advancement of sustainable energy systems.
