MPC-based DC-link Voltage Control for Grid-Connected Power Converter Providing Virtual Inertia

As global energy demands rise, the adoption of renewable sources like wind and solar photovoltaics intensifies to address consumption needs and mitigate greenhouse emissions. However, these sources interfacing with the grid via grid-connected converters, thus diminishing power system inertia. This predisposition can lead to grid frequency deviations during disturbances, potentially causing cascading failures or widespread blackouts. To address this problem, an MPC-based DC-link voltage control for grid-connected power converter providing virtual inertia is proposed. By modulating dc-link voltages with MPC control, capacitors collectively form a significant buffer, enhancing frequency stability within pre-set operational constraints. The effectiveness of the scheme is verified through MATLAB/Simulink. Results validate the efficacy of this approach when load fluctuation happens.
