Design & Development of NOx Control Diagnostics for Piped Natural Gas Engines

Alternate fuel - Piped Natural Gas (PNG) Engines are considered today as a leading novel candidate for prime-movers in power generation application. The study and development of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) control diagnostic (NCD) malfunction strategies involves thorough study and analysis of NOx control diagnostic system’s functioning. These studies are done using experimentation and mathematical modelling with thorough knowledge of system components, sensors and actuators. Among the vital elements of future worthiness is the obligingness with the emission Standards (especially on Nitrogen Dioxides) which will require exact control of NOx control diagnostic system’s functioning. NOx control diagnostic system can be considered to comply with Centre Pollution Control Board (CPCB) emission regulations. This paper proposes a dedicated model-based NOx control diagnostic system’s malfunction detection for PNG Engines. The objectives of simulation and modelling of NCD system includes implementation of NCD on-board the engine which has the capability of: Detecting a NOx control malfunction; Identifying likely cause of NOx control malfunctions by means of information stored in computer memory and/or communicating that information off-board. This document has accordingly been prepared to comprehensively cover requirements of NOx Control Diagnostic for Positive Ignition (PI) base engines.
