A methodology for creating power system models from open source data

Open data solutions as OpenStreetMaps offer are based on crowdsourcing approaches, these contain a lot of information regarding critical infrastructures, including power networks. This paper describes a method based on freely accessible data such as those offered by OpenStreetMap to develop a framework that uses this type of information to create power system models for steady state simulations. A model obtained for a specified region was tested in one scenario with official data from a Portuguese transmission system operator. The results of this test led to the conclusion that it is feasible to effectively model the network using these services, albeit under specific conditions.
