Emotion Recognition in Images and Video with Python For Autism Assessment

The FER python library used in tandem with the OpenCV python library can be used to detect emotions in humans captured both in video and in images. The motivation of this work could be used to diagnose autism in people. FER is a library consisting of a CNN (convolutional neural network) for detecting emotions, and OpenCV is a library used for computer vision and machine learning. OpenCV is capable of producing impressive results involving facial recognition and tracking, meanwhile FER can see improvement in emotion recognition. One of the many signs of a young individual being on the autism spectrum is an inability to recognize emotions in the faces of others. Knowing this, this project has been designed to recognize emotions in people's faces, and test individuals on their emotion recognition skills in order to possibly aid in the diagnosis of autism.
