Developing a Smart Portable Seat Comprising Hydrogel and Pressure Mapping System to Prevent Decubitus Ulcers

This study intends to develop a Smart Cushion System (SCS) incorporating a hydrogel-based cushion and pressure mapping system, a visionary step forward in enhancing mobility assistance technology. By integrating specialized hydrogel material into the cushion component, the main objective of this research study is to explore the theoretical potential for improving user comfort and reducing pressure points during prolonged use, specifically addressing the needs of individuals facing mobility challenges. The proposed hypothesis suggests that the incorporation of hydrogel could lead to substantial improvements in comfort and pressure distribution compared to conventional cushions, potentially providing immediate relief and long-term benefits such as improved posture and reduced risk of discomfort-related complications. However, significant challenges must be addressed, including the technical complexity of integrating pressure mapping sensors with hydrogel materials, ensuring durability and reliability, achieving cost-effectiveness, and accommodating user variability in weight, posture, and mobility needs. While the current efforts are focused on conceptualizing the impact of cushion enhancement, this research study envisions broader implications for advancing the existing seating technology. By addressing diverse user needs through theoretical research, we aim to lay the groundwork for future empirical testing and refinement, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in preventing decubitus ulcers. Ultimately, the goal of this research study is to empower users with greater comfort, mobility, and independence. Though this research work remains hypothetical, the effort is driven by the vision of a future, where smart seating systems offer unparalleled levels of comfort and functionality, enriching the lives of individuals with mobility impairments and paving way for a steadier society.
