An Intelligent Entity in 6G Networks for Advanced Mobility Management: Analyzing the Benefits and Accuracy Requirements

The control plane (CP) delay is one of the parts that form communication’s end-to-end latency. Consequently, delay-sensitive use cases require quick a) control decision-making in the core network (CN) and b) enforcement of the derived decision on the UE side to minimize the CP delay and hence, end-to-end latency. The CP delay primarily occurs due to the interactions among different entities in the CN for deriving and implementing the control decision. Reduction of such interactions is therefore needed, which can be realized using task-specific entities for autonomous decision-making, such as a dedicated entity for making mobility-related decisions. In this regard, we propose an intelligent Mobility Management (iMM) entity for 6G that possesses the UE’s mobility-related data from the radio access network it serves and embeds an intelligent unit for autonomous mobility-related decision-making. We evaluate the iMM solution on the paging example, a process to probe an inactive UE. Using an analytical study, we analyze the minimum accuracy requirements of the trajectory prediction algorithm (TPA) in the intelligent unit of iMM concerning the significant reduction in paging attempts to locate the UE. Our study shows that the iMM solution can reduce paging attempts by 50% if it utilizes TPA of 75% accuracy. We then examine prior art to link our analytical results with the TPA accuracies they achieve to assess the potential reduction in paging attempts.
