Enhancing Software Engineering Education through an Authentic Web-Based Simulation of Companies Workflows

Traditional software engineering education faces limitations in adequately bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical hands-on experience required by industry. This paper introduces a novel web-based platform called Class2Code that aims to address this issue by authentically simulating real-world software development workflows. Consequently, Class2Code replicates the operations of a virtual software company, transporting learners into an immersive environment that closely mirrors professional realities. Students collaborate in teams on realistic, long-term projects, much like in an actual software company. By engaging real users and mimicking organizational structures, processes, and dynamics commonly found in the industry, Class2Code provides an integrated experiential learning experience. This article evaluates the effectiveness of Class2Code in developing practical software engineering skills. Therefore, the results of previous studies indicate that the Class2Code platform can create a shift in technical and soft skills through simulating work experiences. However, challenges remain regarding guidance, monitoring, and blended learning models. With refinements that incorporate recommendations, virtual simulations like Class2Code show promise for transforming software engineering education.
