Vertical Grating Coupler Based Biosensor for Cancer Diagnostics

The Internet of Nano Things (IoNT) brings in many exciting possibilities for healthcare monitoring. Leveraging the simplicity of a vertical grating coupler (VGC), this paper introduces a novel biosensor design for an efficient and cost-effective approach to cancer cell detection. We have been able to demonstrate how VGC can differentiate between normal cell and cancer cells from the surface above the gratings, based on their refractive indices using the COMSOL Multiphysics tool. While the preliminary results show an average sensitivity of 33.3 nm/RIU, the inclusion of gold in the design changes the output power range from 0.21251 W/m-0.33681 W/m to an increased range 0.4166 W/m-0.76694 W/m for 1W/m port input power. This novel design can be further employed in a molecular communication network and can contribute as a future in-vitro application for cancer diagnostics in the domain of IoNT.
