Transformation through Technology: Assessing the Feasibility of Digital Ecosystems Using MBSE

This paper studies the feasibility of designing a hybrid digital ecosystem by leveraging Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for the Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) complex adaptive system. The purpose is to enhance ship maintenance processes, operational effectiveness, and strategic agility. The study discusses the evolution of the term ‘ecosystem’ in organizational and business contexts, its transition into the digital realm, and the challenges associated with developing and implementing digital ecosystems. By applying MBSE as a methodology to design and develop digital ecosystems as a Complex Adaptive System within MSC, the paper proposes a structured and comprehensive approach to capturing, analyzing, and designing a digital ecosystem that can effectively integrate diverse technological components, foster collaboration, and drive innovation. The study emphasizes the importance of balancing idealism and realism in developing digital ecosystems, ensuring they remain relevant and effective in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities in an increasingly complex and dynamic environment.
