Smartphone Phased Array with End-Fire/Broad-Side Radiation Mode Switching for 5G Communications

This study explores a beam-steerable phased array tailored for 28 GHz 5G cellular cognitive networks, emphasizing extremely compact resonators and adaptable radiation patterns. The design includes eight altered T-shaped slot antenna resonators with multiple rectangular directors, linearly positioned atop a smartphone substrate made of RT5880 material. The incorporation of switches on the initial directors enables the phased array to fluidly transition between end-fire and broadside modes of radiation, offering varied coverage capabilities. The design of the proposed array achieves an impedance bandwidth ranging from 27 to 29 GHz, centering on a resonance frequency of 28 GHz. Additionally, the array demonstrates significant characteristics, such as precise radiation patterns and gain metrics.
