Carbon Footprint Assessment for Higher Educational Institutions: A Case Study

This research paper aims to provide a detailed analysis of the carbon footprint assessment for high educational campuses, with a particular focus on understanding the share and contribution of energy consumption to the overall assessment results. High educational campuses are significant in terms of their environmental impact due to infrastructure, transportation, and diverse activities. Evaluating their carbon footprint is imperative for advancing sustainability within the education sector. In light of prior research, particularly electricity used for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, lighting, laboratories, and simulators within educational campuses, emerges as the principal contributor to overall emissions in higher educational institutions (HEIs). This paper selects the College of Maritime Transport and Technology (CMTT), a unique and exclusive higher education campus in North Africa and the Middle East, dedicated to serving the maritime industry by preparing and training candidates for merchant navy careers. Our study aims to determine CMTT's carbon footprint, encompassing all factors, both energy-related and non-energy-related. We will conduct a thorough analysis of the results and propose mitigation strategies, with a specific focus on addressing energy-related emissions and implementing energy management procedures to mitigate their impact.
