Design, Implementation, and Prototyping of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces: Advancing Smart Signal Manipulation in Wireless Networks

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) have drawn much interest from industry and academics in enhancing wireless communication networks. This paper presents an IRS prototype running in the 10 GHz frequency spectrum with 192 reconfigurable elements. The unit cell design is based on reflectarray antenna theory incorporating a varactor diode. It comprises a ground plane at the bottom and four metallic patches that operate as Vcc and ground for the varactors connected at the top. The IRS board has a compact size of
$\mathbf{122.88} \times \mathbf{228.8}\ \mathbf{mm}^{\mathbf{2}}$
. The CST microwave studio is used in the design process of the IRS unit cell. Numerical models show that at 10 GHz, there is a reflection magnitude that exceeds 0.6 and a reflection phase shift of up to 265 degrees. We also conducted an indoor test on the developed hardware prototype, where a 30 cm distance between the IRS board from the receiver, and, the IRS prototype demonstrates a 20 dB power gain compared to a solid copper plate. This paper provides compelling evidence that IRS is an up-and-coming technology for future wireless communications. It highlights the potential of the IRS in enhancing signal strength, overcoming obstacles, and extending the range of wireless communication systems. However, further research and real-world trials are necessary to explore fully and optimize the practical implementation of the developed IRS in different environments and scenarios.
