Analyzing Tuned Mass Dampers for Controlling Building Vibrations Based on Bond-Graph Approach

Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are passive damping systems that reduce the dynamic response of a building by damping and stiffening it. They are used in buildings to prevent extreme vibrations and maintain stability. This study investigates the effectiveness of TMD systems in controlling and damping the vibrations of buildings subjected to dynamic loads. A series of physical experiments were conducted on a scaled building model equipped with a custom-designed TMD system, considering factors like mass ratio, tuning frequency, and damping coefficient. The bond graph model for the TMD was developed using 20 sim software. This mathematical model serves as a foundation for understanding the system and will aid in fine-tuning the parameters in the future. The model was subjected to various types of inputs, and the response was recorded using accelerometers and displacement sensors. The experimental results were compared to numerical simulations to validate the accuracy of TMD design parameters and provide insight into the vibration control process. The TMD-equipped model exhibited significantly reduced peak accelerations and displacements compared to undamped counterparts, particularly in critical modes of vibration.
