Rectangular Slotted Monopole Antenna Design for Breast Cancer Tumor Detection

This paper presents a design of a rectangular slotted ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna for UWB systems applications. The antenna design consisted of parametric study designs including substrate choice, effects of ground plane size and Effects of the transition between the patch and the microstrip feed line to structure the rectangular radiated monopole antenna. The proposed monopole antenna was simulated on an FR4 substrate for breast cancer tumor detection with the aid of commercial software (CST-Microwave Studio). The total physical dimension is 33.14 mm×14.90 mm×0.8 mm. The rectangular slotted antenna is fed via a coplanar waveguide (CPW) to attain the best impedance matching for UWB systems. The presented monopole antenna has an impedance UWB bandwidth of 7.5 GHz from 3.1 GHz up to 10.6 GHz at −10 dB return loss. The simulated UWB monopole antenna displays an omnidirectional radiation behavior with a simulated gain of 7.3 dB at 9 GHz and a favorable radiation efficiency of 97%. Measurements are compared to the simulation result as well as performance of the antenna in proximity to the breast model with and without tumor is also observed. The proposed monopole UWB antenna can be used for various UWB applications.
