Robust Target Detection of Multi-band Coherent Processing UWB Systems

Ultrawide-band (UWB) is widely adopted for target detection which is pivotal for indoor computing applications. However, UWB falters under challenging environmental conditions such as electromagnetic interference and occlusion. To improve the target detection performance under complex indoor scenarios, in this paper, we propose a multi-band coherent processing UWB system. In the evolution of UWB technology, researchers attempt to improve the detection resolution and propose frequency stitching to achieve coherent synthesis between different frequency bands. In this work, we simplify the method proposed in [1] by using partially overlapping frequency bands for coherent processing and further explore our method over multiple bands. Specifically, we utilize the correlation between overlapping frequency bands and employ discrete Fourier transform for signal feature calibration, aiming to avoid complex signal processing procedures such as model correction and interpolation between non-adjacent frequency bands. To explore the impact of the overlap ratio on performance, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations under a typical signal-to-noise ratio. The main contributions are summarized as follows. (1) We develop a coherent processing method for signals with frequency band gaps in [1] to frequency stitching with overlapping bands, which greatly reduces the complexity of the signal processing. (2) We further explore the impact of different overlap ratios on the complexity of coherent synthesis. The effect of large bandwidth fitting under different signal-to-noise ratios can be further investigated. The robustness and significant enhancement are highlighted in the target detection performance of our multi-band coherent processing UWB system, which is in line with the trend of technology evolution and provides fundamental insights.
