A Novel Type of Quasi-optical Microwave Pulse Compressor Based on Interference Controlled by Laser Driven Semiconductor Phase Shifter

A new type of a microwave pulse compressor is proposed based on standing wave quasi-optical resonator and phase-controlled switching of direction of propagation of wave beams reflected from a corrugated mirror. The laser activated phase shifter is made as GaAs wafer placed on a flat copper mirror, which provides effective heat removal and thereby radically solves the problem of increasing the peak and average power of compressed pulses. The report also presents the results of experimental studies of a microwave pulse compressor based on traveling wave resonator, which allows us to evaluate the possibility of using GaAs wafer as a laser-driven phase shifter in the compressor of new type.
