A Polarization Convert Reflective Surface Based Wideband Antenna Array Decoupling Structure

This research paper introduces a new decoupling design that utilizes a Polarization Convert reflective surface (PCRS) for a wideband dual-polarized antenna array. When a linearly polarized (LP) incident wave, such as a +45° LP wave, interacts with the PCRS, it generates two orthogonal partially reflective waves (±45° LP) simultaneously. This unique characteristic of the PCRS enhances isolations between co- and cross-polarized ports in dual-polarized antenna. To achieve a broad decoupling bandwidth, a two-layer PCRS structure is utilized to increase reflective wave generation and extend their path lengths. The implementation of 1 × 4 and 2×2 dual-polarized array antennas with the PCRS demonstrates the effectiveness of this design. The results show significant enhancements in isolations between co- and cross-polarized ports within the 3.5–4.9GHz frequency range, with isolations exceeding 20dB, representing a 33.3% increase in bandwidth. Simulation results indicate minimal impact of the PCRS on the beam scanning performance of the 1 × 4 array model, suggesting that the PCRS has little effect on the antenna’s radiation characteristics. This novel decoupling structure using the PCRS shows promising potential for improving the performance of wideband dual-polarized antenna arrays.
