Comparative Study of Wind Field Measurements by Networked Weather Radars in the Hangzhou Area

In the study of the evolution of precipitation storms, including their formation, development, and dissipation, the vertical distribution profile of horizontal winds is a crucial reference for the dynamic sources in precipitation processes. This profile significantly indicates the convergence and divergence of airflows at various altitudes within convective storms, as well as the rising and sinking of airflows within the storm. Doppler weather radars provide radial velocity data of hydrometeors within the storm, along with reflectivity factor information. In areas covered by multiple weather radars, multiple radial velocities of a target can be obtained, which, when two or more are available, can be used to calculate or invert the velocity field within the storm in the shared detection area, thereby providing information about the internal wind field of the storm. To validate the inversion results of this method, this paper uses data from the X-band networked weather radars in the Hangzhou area, wind profile radar data, and high-altitude detection data from radiosondes. Selecting wind field data from August to September 2022, and using radiosonde data as a standard, conducted comparative analysis between wind profile radar data, radiosonde data, and network weather radar retrieved wind field data. Ultimately, this paper accomplishes a comparative analysis of wind field data from these three detection devices. In the end, statistical and correlation analyses were employed to identify the differences and similarities between the wind field data from these different detection devices, providing a basis and justification for the usability of wind field data from Hangzhou’s X-band weather radar network.
