A Frequency-energy Composite Selective Surface for High-power Microwave Protection

To address the potential risk posed by high-power microwave (HPM) emissions on electronic equipment, a frequency-energy composite selective surface (FECSS) is proposed in this paper. The FECSS is a periodic structure, with each unit contains rectangular patch, square ring and four PIN diodes on the top, cross patch with four rectangular patches on the bottom. The results show that the FECSS functions as a frequency selective surface (FSS) for low-power signal, with a 3dB transmission band ranging from 3.2GHz to 3.7GHz. Once the FECSS is exposed to HPM radiation and the field intensity exceeds the inherence threshold of FECSS, voltages induced on the metal surface are able to trigger on pin diodes. Consequently, the FECSS operates in C band with a 3dB bandwidth of 0.2GHz, while the maximum shielding effectiveness (SE) can reach 16dB in the original operating frequency band. The FECSS exhibits promising applications in the field of HPM protection.
