Universal Design Device for Electromagnetic Shielding Performance Measurement of Multi-core, Quasi-coaxial, or Non-coaxial Shielded Cables

For multi-core, quasi-coaxial, or non-coaxial shielded cables, the electromagnetic shielding performance the cables and the corresponding accessories can offer has always been one of the most attractive research topics in electromagnetic compatibility. To assess the electromagnetic shielding performance of these cables or cable configurations, the prerequisite is to have a dedicated test facility or system. More and more practices have shown that the classic triaxial method based-measurements are more commonly accepted for electromagnetic compatibility applications, but it is worth noting that the test facility is limited to only a few sizes of cables. For this, by using the classic triaxial method in IEC 62153-4-3, a universally applicable prescriptive design device has been proposed. And out of this, several key techniques in mechanical structures, e.g., the short circuit connection blocks in half-moon-shaped, the impedance matching for the cables under test, coaxial tube and test instruments, have also been highlighted and discussed in detail in this work. Subsequently, we show the developed test facility by using the aforementioned principles and details. Moreover, considering the cable configurations, e.g., different load conditions (short circuit, and matched), shielding with magnetic materials and non-magnetic materials, we also present the shielding performance of different configurations in terms of the experiments performed in the new test facility. The experimental results have indicated that the proposed standardized procedure-based test facility can be applied to different cable configurations, e.g., non-coaxial cables or cables with magnetic shieldings, aiming to well estimate the shielding performance of cables and corresponding electromagnetic interference suppression strategies.
