Ka-band Lens Antenna Based on Metasurface

The existing phased array antenna has high costs, high power consumption, and is difficult to be widely applied. The lens antenna technology holds the potential to become a low-cost solution by reducing the number of phase shifters. The flat and short focal length lenses are crucial for antenna integration, which is essential to vast mobile platforms (such as aircraft, automobiles, etc.). However, the design of wide-field-of-view flat focal plane lenses remains a challenge. This paper proposed a new design methodology of a millimeter-wave wide-angle metalens. The metasurface antenna has measured a ±50° angle scanning capability with a gain exceeding 18dBi and a focal length of less than 3 times of wavelength. The PB phase is adopted as the unit cell structure and the phase profile is enabled by a random search optimization algorithm. The optimal solution can be obtained by independently optimizing the phase of each ring deflector. The proposed approach has the potential application in metasurface lens designs with merits for multiple-target optimization, which has potential applications in satellite communication antennas and beam steering.
