A Review and Discussion of Metrics for Origami-Based Deployable Arrays

Many decisions must be made when designing deployable arrays for space applications. To make designing these arrays easier, this work provides classifications, metrics, and characteristics that apply to and affect array deployment techniques. Classifications emphasized include intrinsic/extrinsic and active/passive. Metrics focused on are mass, usable area, volume, and energy. Energy is specifically discussed to show variation in stable and unstable approaches, as well as combinations of approaches. Characteristics of these deployables, such as actuation method, number of degrees of freedom, and type of array, are also included to aid the designer. Trade-offs are likely necessary in the selection process and are discussed to aid the designer.
