Analysis of the Possibility to Use Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Systems (Direct-to-Device) in the IMT Bands of Terrestrial Cellular Networks

The article considers feasibility of utilizing hybrid satellite systems within the terrestrial IMT networks bands, despite potential interference challenges from the latter. Specifically, it is assessed how terrestrial IMT networks might have an adverse effect to the Earth-to-space link of hybrid satellite systems. The article also covers the current uses of hybrid satellite systems and shares insights from the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023, focusing on the agenda items related with new frequency bands for the mobile satellite service. Based on the analysis it is concluded whether it is possible to utilize hybrid satellite systems within terrestrial IMT frequency bands and addresses possible ways of overcoming the interference challenges from the terrestrial IMT networks.
