AAO Diffused Red-Green-Blue LD White-Light Bulb for 39.6-Gbit/s Data Link

Lighting communication is the ongoing development in human society for fulfilling the practical need of full-space network coverage with heterogeneous wired and wireless communication infrastructures. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) have been successfully introduced as the optical wireless communications data carrier. The latter reveals better data transmission performance owing to its higher modulation bandwidth under the assistance of inherent relaxation oscillation behavior. However, the LD can hardly perform the white-lighting feature due to its beam collimation nature which only provides intense illumination at a point. To concurrently approach the divergent lighting and wireless communication in free space, the white-lighting bulb with a diffuser cap made by co-packing red, green, and blue laser diodes in one copper housing mount is demonstrated with its illuminance lux (ILX) of >300 lx, correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6500K, and color-rendering-index (CRI) of >80. For on-desk light communication, such an RGB-LD white-light bulb enables the on-desk lighting and short-reach data broadcasting with an allowable data rate of up to 39.6 Gbit/s under the 16-QAM DMT format through the tri-color R/G/B channels.
