Industry 4.0

Summary

The internet of things (IoT) is a network of physical objects that can collect and share electronic information. The industrial internet of things (IIoT) is an extension of it in industrial applications. The IIoT comprehends a wide range of “smart” objects from industrial machines that generate and transmit data about the production process to sensors that collect information from various industrial devices. Based on the application, the data collected by these unique “smart” devices may require a different type of security protection. There are many security issues for IIoT applications, such as improper access control, outdated software, lack of encryption, system vulnerability, lack of reliable performance area, vendor security status and inadequate privacy protection. This chapter aims at security requirements applicable to all three different layers of the Industry 4.0 landscape and various types of security measures that should be followed for particular kinds of intelligent sensors and devices used in IIoT applications, especially the online security challenges faced by the smart objects.
