Use of Terrestrial Laser Scanners to increase the Safety of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican

In October 2023, the Department of Fire Corps of the Italian Ministry of Interior (CNVVF) and the Reverenda Fabrica Sancti Petri in the Vatican signed an agreement to cooperate in a number of activities aimed at increasing the protection of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican and the safety of the people visiting the monument. Since then, CNVVF personnel entered the Vatican several times to deploy Laser Scanner systems with the aim to obtain a complete cloud of point of the wide Basilica. Such outcome will be key to reach a number of objectives, spanning from the protection of the monument to the safety of the pilgrims. From each of the objectives can be inferred specific requirements in terms of accuracy, spatial resolution, photo quality, and cloud completeness. The authors will describe systems and procedures employed to satisfy such requirements, as well as their wider applicability to similar cases.
