Italian National Radon Action Plan: The state of the Art in Campania Region

The Italian national action plan for radon 2023–2032 published in GU Serie Generale n.43 del 21-02-2024, accompanied by the Italian Legislative Decree (D.lgs) 101/2020, requires the italian regions to monitor radon indoor concentrations in order to identify radon priority areas. All Italian regions have to adopt it and stipulate a regional plan for the implementation of that national action plan. According to the Italian plan, the number of places to be sampled must take into account the size of the resident population for each municipality: the size of the sample of indoor places to be measured for each municipality is given by the number of resident inhabitants raised to the power 0.3 with a minimum of 10 homes per municipality. Nowadays, only three regions have already adopted regional action plan in line with the national plan: Lombardy, Piedmont and Sardinia that define as priority areas all that ones that exceed the limit radon concentration value (i.e.
$300\ Bq/m^{3}$
) in 15% of monitored buildings (as established by D.lgs 101/2020). These regions also use geological settings of the region to create a potential radon map. Campania region has not yet implemented the Italian plan, although it is one of the regions with the highest values of indoor radon levels in Italy, according to previous regional and national measurements campaigns performed in the last two decades. The state of the art of the indoor radon measurement in Campania, according to the new guidelines of the Italian national radon plan, are for each province: 149 for Avellino, 90 for Benevento, 230 for Caserta, 666 for Napoli, and 350 for Salerno. On average 80% of new measurements are still required to cover the entire region. In addition, 48 municipalities are already monitored with the number of measurements required by the Italian national radon plan and about one fourth of them are identified as radon priority area having at least 15% of measurements exceeding
