Fiber to the Radio/C-WAN Architecture and Its Performance Analysis

With the increasing demand for wireless services, multiple access points (AP) are inevitable. To address the serious interference among multiple APs and reduce deployment costs, we propose a fiber to the radio (FTTR) centralized wireless access network (C-WAN) architecture for the first time, where multiple APs can provide services to multiple users simultaneously through massive access and centralized scheduling. A multi-AP minimum mean square error based greedy (MA-MMSE-Greedy) algorithm is proposed to select the optimal antennas of multiple APs to maximize the system capacity. We also analyze the performance of random access and nonrandom access, and propose a grouped uplink-OFDM nonrandom-access (UONRA) mechanism to improve the quality of service (QoS) of networks. Numerical results demonstrate that the MA-MMSE-Greedy algorithm can almost achieve the best performance of the system, and the grouped UONRA mechanism significantly outperforms random access in terms of throughput and delay.
