NiO-Promoted Metal Oxides/SPCE Electrochemical Sensors for Glucose Monitoring in Environmental Applications

NiO-SnO
2
and Ni-ZnO electrode materials were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors were fabricated by printing the electrode materials on screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) substrate. Electrochemical tests for glucose sensing were performed in alkaline environment using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Differential Pulsed Voltammetry (DPV) and Amperometry. NiO modifier was found to enhance the glucose sensing performances with respect to single SnO2 and ZnO base materials. Based on the reported data, the NiO-ZnO/SPCE sensor was selected for glucose quantification, exhibiting an experimental limit of detection (LOD) of 25 µM. This simple and low-cost platform appears to be promising for the non-enzymatic glucose sensing in industrial applications.
