ZEBRA Project: 222Rn and 220Rn Gas Removal by Zeolite Material

ZEBRA (ZEolite Blocks RAdon) project, financed by the Research Funding of University of Federico II, addresses the crucial issue of radon gas removal and monitoring by using zeolite materials. Radon gas, particularly isotopes Rn-222 and Rn-220, poses significant health risks due to its radioactive nature and ability to accumulate in indoor spaces. Zeolites are a class of aluminosilicates known for their well-established properties such as high ion exchange capacities, adsorption efficiency, resistance to radiation, and abundance. They have been successfully utilized in various applications including the removal of artificial radionuclides from nuclear waste. However, their potential for removing naturally occurring radon isotopes has not been thoroughly explored. The project seeks to fill gaps in existing literature by investigating the adsorption capabilities of zeolites for these radon isotopes, especially focusing on Rn-220, which has not been extensively studied yet. The project methodology involves experiments in controlled atmospheres of both radon isotopes at known concentrations within a closed chamber, and, subsequent radiometric measurements. Various types of zeolites, including synthetic (4A and 13X) and naturally occurring ones (chabazite-rich tuff and Neapolitan yellow tuff, the latter containing phillipsite and chabasite as zeolitic phases) will be used. The adsorbed quantity of radon will be measured using gamma spectrometry techniques by a high purity germanium detector (HPGe). Furthermore, the project aims to extend its investigation beyond laboratory by conducting field measurements in selected rooms within university environments. This real-world application will provide valuable insights into the practical effectiveness of zeolites in monitoring radon levels in indoor spaces.
