Research of Electronic Speed Controllers Designs and Functional for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Unmanned aerial vehicles have been gaining popularity in recent years. Along with designing and manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles, it is essential to consider the components that make them function. One of the critical components of any unmanned aerial vehicles is its power system. Currently, most unmanned aerial vehicles utilize electric brushless direct current motors. To power brushless direct current motors, a specialized control unit known as an electronic speed controller is required. The efficiency of unmanned aerial vehicles power consumption, and consequently, the duration of flight, depends on the efficacy of energy conversion within this component. The maneuverability of an unmanned aerial vehicles is linked to the speed of response of the electronic speed controller to control signals. Additionally, the electronic speed controller can contribute significantly to the weight of the overall power system, which may adversely affect flight performance. Therefore, accurately designing an electronic speed controller is crucial. This article presents an analysis of 325 models of electronic speed controllers from 18 distinct manufacturers intended for unmanned aerial vehicles applications. The designs of these electronic speed controllers are evaluated, and the benefits of each design are discussed.
