Determination of the Volumetric Activity of Radon by the Method of Electrostatic Deposition of Radon Decay Products and Investigation of the Radon Hazard of Novosibirsk

This study investigates the equivalent equilibrium volume activity of radon²²² Rn in basement and ground floor rooms of administrative and residential buildings in the city of Novosibirsk. The assessment of the obtained data and conclusions regarding the radon hazard of the premises are made in accordance with the radiation safety standards RSS 9 9 / 2 0 0 9, and conclusions about the radon hazard of the studied premises are drawn. An experimental deposition module based on the electrostatic precipitation of decay products of radon is proposed and tested. The determination of the equivalent equilibrium volume activity of radon is based on the method of electrostatic precipitation of radon decay products. The methodology for quantitative calculation of radon activity is based on the counting of beta radiation from precipitated decay products in equilibrium with radon. The operability of the assembled prototype is tested and correlated with a professional radon and thoron radiometer “RAMON-01”. A gamma radiation spectrometer “RadiaCode-101” is used to confirm the deposition of radon decay products.
