Research of Methods of Combating Information Security Threats in PON Networks

Based on the analysis of passive optical access network technologies, it was revealed that one of the significant disadvantages of such networks is the problem of ensuring information security, which consists in the ease of interception of the downstream data flow. The transmitted data in the downward direction is subject to encryption. The fact is that in the upstream data stream, an individual encryption key is transmitted for data transmitted in the downstream direction to a specific subscriber. The upstream data stream itself is not encrypted. In case of covert interception of the upstream data flow, a third party will receive the encryption key, which is an information security threat for passive optical access network. The purpose of this article is to study methods of combating threats to information security in passive optical access networks. The article proposes passive and active methods to counteract the hidden interception of the upstream data flow. The use of these methods in an existing network will not affect its performance.
