Design and Control of a Multi-Port EV Charger Powered by Grid and PV

This paper presents a Silicon Carbide (SiC) based multi-port electric vehicle (MPEV) charger that can be powered from both grid and Photovoltaic (PV) panels using a central DC link. The design and control of MPEV charger facilitate the seamless integration of the grid, PV, and EV, enabling diverse functionalities like vehicle-to-grid (V2G), grid-to-vehicle (G2V), PV to EV, and PV to grid modes. The MPEV charger consists of three ports: the grid port, equipped with a bidirectional AC-DC rectifier/inverter; the PV port featuring a three-phase interleaved boost converter (IBC); and the EV port, which incorporates a bidirectional isolated dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The utilization of SiC devices switching at 50 kHz ensures high overall efficiency of the MPEV charger. The total power loss breakdown along with controller design is detailed. The power loss breakdown, analyzed through PLECS thermal modeling, highlights an impressive combined efficiency of 93.2% of the 10 kW MPEV charger. Various modes of operation, including V2G, G2V, PV to EV, and PV to grid are demonstrated that highlight the robustness of the designed controllers.
