An Improved Li-Ion Battery Architecture for UPS Applications

This article presents the shift from lead acid to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in various applications, particularly focusing on their role in uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems in Pakistan. Li-ion technology offers superior energy density, power density, efficiency, depth of discharge, and fast charging capabilities compared to lead acid batteries, addressing their limitations at a lower cost. This study proposes integrating Li-ion batteries into existing UPS designs, necessitating novel cell architectures and sophisticated control measures. It introduces a Li-ion battery pack topology optimized for UPS applications to ensure maximum energy extraction while preserving battery life and meeting operational constraints.
