Suppressing the Post-Fault Overvoltage With Cooperative Reactive Power Control for SMES Integrated PMSG-Based Wind Turbine

In order to suppress the overvoltage caused by surplus reactive power in wind farms after the fault clearance, this paper proposes a multi-stage control scheme cooperating the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and the permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG). During the voltage dip, the reactive current reference of PMSG is dynamically modified to reduce the surplus reactive power, as the precaution of the overvoltage. After the fault clearance, the active and reactive power output of PMSG is adjusted based on the optimized values calculated by the preset model to minimize the overvoltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). If the overvoltage cannot be suppressed by the aforementioned controls, the smooth fault clearance control is activated to further dissipate the surplus power with SMES. The comparative simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme under various fault conditions, which can suppress the overvoltage from 29.0% to 6.1%. Since the SMES is mainly used for the power balance after the fault clearance, less superconducting tapes and more cost-effectiveness can be achieved.
