AC Loss Calculation on a 10 MJ/5 MW HTS SMES with Hybrid Winding Structure

Larger capacity has become a trend in the development of high-temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage system (HTS-SMES). A 10 MJ/5 MW HTS-SMES is under construction, and the cost of the conductor can be effectively reduced by introducing a hybrid winding structure with low-cost MgB₂ cable in the low-field region. In this article, the AC losses of a 10 MJ/5 MW SMES magnet under different working conditions are investigated and it provides a reference for the design of the cooling system and control strategy.
