Compact, UWB, Dual-Polarized Antenna Based on Tightly Coupling Effect

The escalating trend toward high integration in wireless systems underscores the pivotal importance of antennas with wide bandwidth and compact sizes. In this letter, a compact ultrawideband (UWB) dual-polarized antenna is proposed with a remarkable bandwidth, which can basically cover the S, C, and X bands. To realize the UWB operation, this design harnesses the UWB principle of tightly coupled arrays, thereby facilitating bandwidth expansion. Moreover, to achieve optimal compactness in electrical sizes, our design mitigates the edge effect through the implementation of edge-coupled patches and shorting vias. An ultrawide impedance bandwidth of 135.7% ranging from 2.3 GHz to 12 GHz with voltage standing-wave ratio (VSWR) < 2.5 ($\vert$S$_{11}$$\vert$ < −7.3 dB) is observed. Notably, the configuration of the antenna is exceedingly compact, measuring merely 0.18$\lambda _{L}\times 0.18\lambda _{L}\times$ 0.09$\lambda _{L}$, where $\lambda _{L}$ denotes the wavelength at the lowest operating frequency. Due to the attractive advantages of UWB and compact sizes, our proposed antenna emerges as a promising candidate for integration as radiation elements in UWB highly integrated wireless systems.
