Effects of Icing and Galloping on the Insulation Performance of 10 kV Overhead Insulated Conductor

Icing and galloping caused by extreme weather may lead to the damage and conductor breakage of 10 kV overhead insulated conductors. In this paper, the forces on the insulation layer of overhead insulated conductors in the process of galloping are investigated by ANSYS Workbench finite element analysis under different icing thicknesses and wind speeds. And the distribution of the electric field on the surface of the conductors and around the conductors is investigated by COMSOL simulation software. As the intensity of conductor galloping increases, it correspondingly escalates the damage to its insulation layer, resulting in the formation of cracks and the infiltration of moisture. This can cause conductor breakage. When the conductor is covered with icicle-type icing, the maximum electric field strength around it is three times of that under normal conditions, and the field strength below the center of the conductor also increases.
