Evolution of the Japanese test coil work for the Large Coil Task

Japan is now making one of the six coils for the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Large Coil Task. All six coilswill be brought together and tested in toridal array at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the United States. This paper describes the status of both the Japanese LCT coil fabrication and the domestic test facility construction. The Japanese LCT coil is pool cooled, employs Nb-Ti conductor with two gradings wound edge wise, and utilizes 304L stainless steel as the structural material. It is now in the final fabrication stage at industry. Many pancakes have already been fabricated and the coil structure is ready to accept the stacked winding. The domestic test facility, which consists of a vacuum tank, a helium liquefier/refrigerator system, a computer system and a power supply, is being prepared for domestic testing of the coil before delivery to ORNL. The helium liquefier/refrigerator has a specified capacity of 300 1/h or 1,000w at 4.5K. A new building of 2,500m
