A Smart IoT System for Real-Time Monitoring of Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality Using Low-Cost Sensors

This project developed a portable air quality station enclosed within a 3D printed casing, aiming to streamline sampling and reduce material usage in laboratories. Given the health concerns tied to specific gases and particles, particularly for vulnerable populations like asthmatics and children, this innovation holds significant promise. With COVID-19 transmission largely airborne, the importance of indoor ventilation is paramount in minimizing risks. Leveraging open-source Python software, a Raspberry Pi served as the central data collection and storage unit, interfacing with sensors via GPIO, serial, and I2C connections. Notably, the device is designed to be modular, allowing users to target specific pollutants for measurement. Validation through end-user testing confirmed the effectiveness of its portable setup. This approach offers a cost-effective means of establishing air quality networks, catering to the needs of vulnerable groups. The module demonstrates a high reliability rate of 95.30% in detecting common pollutants, validated through CO2 monitoring in classrooms (with a reliability of 90.47% compared to commercial devices) and outdoor air quality monitoring (with an 85.63% reliability rate).
