Parametric Design of an Adaptive Shading Solution for an Overheated Residential High-Rise: A Digital Fabrication Approach

This paper presents a study investigating the design of an adaptive shading solution for a 27-storey residential nZEB high-rise experiencing overheating issues in Bilbao, northern Spain. The building has failed to meet thermal comfort expectations as studied in previous publications. This study aims to address this challenge through the exploration of a retrofit shading system that complements the existing facade. To achieve an optimized solution, a parametric design approach was followed, tailoring the shading system to the unique solar radiation and orientation of each window. The research will emphasize seamless integration with digital fabrication techniques to de-velop prototypes of the adaptive shading elements. The pro-posed parametric design showcases an interesting path towards innovative shading solutions catered to buildings that are espe-cially sensitive to solar radiation, or that benefit differentially from solar radiation depending on orientation and the season of the year. The design managed to provide the targeted shading while pre-serving solar gains when they are beneficial also and access to natural light and exterior views. By harnessing the potential of digital fabrication, the study seeks to ensure practical feasibility and ease of implementation for this retrofitting en-deavour.
