Towards Everyday Physiological Monitoring: A Sock Prototype for Electrodermal Activity Measurements

This study investigated the possibilities of an everyday sock with textile electrodes in measuring electrodermal activity (EDA). EDA data of 17 adult participants was evaluated across video-based stimulation from three different locations: finger, right foot, and sock (left foot). The data was analyzed using cross-correlation and counting peaks in the data. The results showed median cross-correlation of 0.83 and 0.88 for the derivatives of the data and the detrended data, respectively, between the sock and the finger, and similarly 0.89 and 0.92 between the sock and the foot. In comparison, the median cross-correlations between the finger and the foot were 0.74 and 0.80. In peak detection, the sock, the finger, and the foot data had an average of 7.6, 11.1 and 10.6 peaks detected, respectively. These promising preliminary results indicate that sock-based measurement setup has great potential for future development. This study is an important next step in the field, as it is using the sock for measuring EDA during video-based stimulation and compares the results to two other measurement locations.
