Extended Abstract: Training Engineering Faculty on How to Mentor Scientific Communication: Soft Piloting an Evidence-based Intervention at Rice University

Graduate students’ ability to confidently communicate scientific information is a critical skill leading to many important student career outcomes, including an intention to pursue or remain in a research career. Faculty advisors play a pivotal role in developing scientific communication (SC) skills, yet rarely receive direct instruction or support in mentoring SC. This abstract presents the pilot of an SC mentoring intervention (SCOARE mentor training workshop) targeting Rice University’s School of Engineering faculty. The next steps include work towards integrating the SCOARE workshop into faculty development programming.
