Harnessing Virtual Synchronous Generators: Implications for Inter-area Oscillations

With Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) emerging as a promising technology for renewable integration, this paper explores the implications of integrating VSG, a Grid Forming Converter (GFM) topology into power systems. Through small signal analysis, the study elucidates the influence of various parameters on the stability of the system, providing the damping and tuning guidelines. The analysis of low-frequency oscillations in multi-machine systems is carried out examining the interaction and modification of existing modes following the implementation of VSGs. Using Single Machine Infinite Bus System and Kundur's two area system as test systems, the simulations are conducted in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
