An Interleaved Bidirectional Switched-Capacitor Converter with Reduced Stress on the Capacitors

Switched-capacitor converters offer high efficiency and power density however, the technique is entangled with large transient currents, transferred between capacitors which relegate the application to lower powers. To this end, a variety of solutions have been presented in the literature. In this paper an interleaved bidirectional topology is proposed based on preceding works offering a reduced stress on the capacitors. Also, the gain of voltage and switch voltage stresses are respectively twice and half the bidirectional boost. The test has been performed on a hybrid electric vehicle. The results suggest a more sluggish response but less current ripple compared to the boost. Also, it presents a more superior performance in contrast to the akin switched capacitor topology. As such, it will be suitable for higher power applications.
